These Chunky ROOT-BEER Mugs take everyone WAY back to
simpler days & times .... where take-out was an EVENT and A&W was there.
A&W was established in the USA (1919), then later in Canada (1956)
. All kinds of LOGO-adorned items have been available over time - BUT - it's these Mugs - frosted, full of ice-cold, house, root-beer soda - which are ICONIC!!

Crystal-Clear Heavy-Thick-Chunky Glass, LOGO-EMBOSSED, ROOT-BEER MUGS
in most-excellent gently to barely-used condition.
ALL surfaces are HIGHLY-glossy, shiny, crisp and clear
. There are NO chips, cracks; NO significant scratches, stains, nor hazing - just a tiny bit of rub-wear, here-there, one has a flea bite at the top of one angular panel & a bit more faint scratching.
The CHUNKY design-form is excellent and well proportioned.
The glass is thick, VERY-HEAVY, and slightly straw-coloured - a little variability in colour-tone from Mug to Mug.
The handles are closed D-Shape, very generous in size
. The base is thick and heavy,
rounded-curved on the inside adding great visual appeal when beverage filled, having an octagonal shape at the very base.
The bottom half of each mug is stylized and heavily sculpted with staggered or diamond-shaped pleats - this is the most MOST POPULAR Mug-style made for A&W.
The
LOGO is well-recognized to represent A&W
- many versions have appeared over the years - the one seen here is
VERY SIMILAR to the US version released in 1968-71 and again later. This Canadian all-glass stylized LOGO is likely from the late 1960's and even into the '70's. The LOGO
- stylistically encircled "A & W" - is prominently visible as the
design's surface is textured – pebbled …
catching the light well.
Each A&W Soda-Mug measures - 3 1/8" in diameter across the top, 4 1/2" across the handle, 2 7/8" across the base, (3" across the base, at the points), 4 3/8" in height.
These Mugs are Mama or Regular-Size 10-oz Mugs.
SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –
Indiana Glass Co. - A&W Root Beer -
Indiana Glass Co. made the very first A&W mug in 1919
–
#1504 a 10 oz mug
. Later, in
1921 a baby mug was added - #1505 a 3 ½ oz mug
. Indiana Glass Co. made these mugs
until 1980
.
Over the years, THREE sizes of these A&W Soda-Mugs were produced - Baby-Small - 3 1/4”ht; Mama-Regular - 4 3/8” ht; Papa-Tall - 6” ht.
There are no maker's markings on the Mugs - however - many well-known makers have been associated with their production over the years including Anchor-Hocking, US Glass, Indiana Glass (most likely), and the Libby Glass Co - who is the maker of the most current Mugs.
The Mugs made for the Canadian market may have been manufactured in the USA or may have been manufactured by a Canadian glassmaker - perhaps Dominion Glass Co.

All hard-surface items are – well-washed in hot soapy water, rinsed, air-dried, photographed, wrapped in clean paper towel, packed, and placed into clean storage boxes until purchased.
Processing Blankets, Once in Hand -
All Blankets are washed in Wool-Safe Laundry Detergent; dried on warm heat, until dry; photographed from both sides; folded and bagged loosely, then placed into a storage cupboard having cedar shingles throughout the cupboard until sold.
There are videos and web-sites on line which explain how wool items can be re-stretched to their proper shape or size (or closer to) – as shrinkage happens when washed and dried.
